Ghanaian Foundation

Chief Afulang - chairman

Margreet has been a great colleague of mine, as a volunteer at Ghana Education Service. I asked if she wanted to come back to Ghana after her volunteer work to set up a school for children with intellectual disabilities. These children are ignored by their environment. Parents don't see that they have talents. We would like to develop those talents.

Richard Asumbisa - secretary

From the very beginning I thought it was a good idea to set up a special school for special children. With my ideas I can ensure that the school becomes as sustainable as possible. I also want to look at how we can raise funds in Ghana. In addition to the school, I would like to give workshops about tools and sustainability.

Father Isaac Akatapa - treasurer

In my work as a priest, I meet many people, including parents with a disabled child. They want to take care of the child but have no idea how: the environment is against it! (They think.) By starting a special school, we can help the children and their parents.

Margreet Carpaij – general board member

Children with an intellectual- or physical disability are not seen and have no chance of education. I wish the children and the parents a joint pride in each other, that they are seen as they are and that they can be who they are!

Kojo Mahama – general board member

I have been working with Margreet since 2006. First in the Timaachaab foundation (Let us help eachother) and now in the Lumen Mundi Foundation. I am the forman at the construction and discuss with Margreet every day what needs to be done. I know a lot of people in Builsa, so I always know how to find someone for work! When the school opens, I become the congierge.

Plan

After the school was built in September 2020-December 2021, with a security room, and three workers were appointed: an administrator, a supervisor and a night watchman, the plans are as follows.

2022

  • Composition of a school team: a teacher, an educational supporter/carer and a cook. The administrator also becomes a practical trainer, the foreman becomes a janitor/handyman. Adaptation of the MotorKing for transporting the children. Recruitment and registration of the children. Start of school with a maximum of 16 children aged 4 to 18 years. Conversion of a container from the Netherlands into a workshop Shaping practical training for both children and the elderly with a disability. Collaboration with Social Welfare, the GES Disability Group and primary schools in the region. Raising funds. Developing workshops for parents and carers about dealing with a child with a disability. Develop various other workshops aimed at the communities. E.g. learn how to use power tools, sewing lessons, making furniture. Construction of vegetable and fruit garden.

2023

  • Appointment of a second teacher and commissioning of the second room. Expansion with a maximum of 16 children from 4 to 18 years. Further design practical education. Investigate how the children's work can be sold. Exploring possibilities for building houses for the children. Exploring possibilities for offering various types of internships. Build a breeding pond for catfish.

2024

  • Building houses for children who cannot live at home. Recruitment of staff for extracurricular supervision and care. Develop and implement internship plans. Investigate options for keeping (poultry) livestock.

Continuous attention will be paid to improving and expanding practical education, increasing income, and good contact with Social Welfare, the GES Disability Group, the communities and the regular primary schools.
